Raw Pumpkin Seeds
Raw pumpkin seeds can be a great addition to your dog's meals! They are a great source of vitamins & minerals, especially, Vitamin K, Vitamin E, B Vitamins, manganese and zinc. Pumpkin seeds are also a good source for magnesium and phosphorous.
One study also suggests that raw pumpkin seeds, when combined with distilled water can produce an antihelmintic (can destroy parasitic worms) effect in rat models. Link to the study: Preclinical studies of cucurbita maxima (pumpkin seeds) a traditional intestinal antiparasitic in rural urban areas.
"Diets rich in pumpkin seeds were also reported to be associated with lower levels of gastric, breast, lung, and colorectal cancer" (source). According to one review done on "The Effect of Pumpkin (Cucurbita Pepo L) Seeds and L-Arginine Supplementation on Serum Lipid Concentrations in Atherogenic Rats", pumpkin seeds are an amazing source of polyunsaturated fatty acids, phytosterols, and antioxidant vitamins like carotenoids. Since pumpkin seed oil can slow down the "progression of hypertension, protect against arthritis, and possess a hypoglycemic activity (can lower blood sugar), it is said that pumpkin seeds may also possess these benefits" (source).
Flaxseeds are also a great source of many vitamins and minerals. However, to make sure those nutrients are the bioavailable to the body, it is important to grind them up. Flaxseeds are a good source of thiamine (vitamin B1), magnesium, folate, phosphorous, potassium and fiber.
The suggested benefits of flaxseed "are reduction of cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis, autoimmune and neurological disorders. Flax protein helps in the prevention and treatment of heart disease and in supporting the immune system" (source).
"According to its physico-chemical composition, flaxseed is a multicomponent system with bio-active plant substances such as oil, protein, dietary fiber, soluble polysaccharides, lignans, phenolic compounds, vitamins (A, C, F and E) and mineral (P, Mg, K, Na, Fe, Cu, Mn and Zn" (source).
Flaxseed is also one of the richest sources of lignans. "Lignans are a group of phytonutrients which are widely distributed in the plant kingdom and Flaxseed is the richest source of providing lignan precursor such as secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) (source). SDG may have some roles in preventing certain cancers such as breast, lung and colon cancer. This is all due to "its strong anti-proliferative, antioxidant, anti-oestrogenic and/or anti-angiogenic activity" (source).
Sardines In Water (No Salt Added)
Sardines are an amazing source of Omega-3 fatty acids EPA & DHA. EPA & DHA have shown to reduce inflammation in the body, and support a healthy skin and coat. Sardines are also high in vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin D, selenium and phosphorous. Sardines are said to be particularly good for supporting cardiovascular and brain health. Sardines also happen to be one of the least contaminated fish because of its small size.
It is always important to make sure you are sourcing your sardines from a reliable place or company, especially if you are using tinned sardines. When using tinned sardines, it is important to always try and get a tin that is BPA free, and that the sardines are only in water with no salt added.
